A great many tribes that migrated to and called Anatolia home chose to settle in Afyonkarahisar because of its geographic location.  Subsequently these tribes combined their traditions with local traditions to create new traditions that contributed to the progress of civilizations: these traditions still exist today. Phrygia Valley is a lesser known example of an important cultural heritage in Turkey. 
 

There are a great number of large and small fairy chimneys surrounding the Phrygia Valley. Although Cappadocia is the first place that comes to mind when fairy chimneys are mentioned, Afyon too has many fairy chimneys worth seeing.

Built on a volcanic rock mass, the 226 m Afyon Castle’s history dates back thousands of years. The Castle’s known history dates it back to the Hittites and continues well into the final periods of the Ottoman Empire. Afyon Castle affords a spectacular view of the surroundings.

Located in Afyon, the Kocatepe monument was built at the site of the battle of the Great Offensive which commenced and was led by Commander-in-chief Mustafa Kemal on August 26, 1992 leading to the independence of Anatolia and the Turkish Nation. Our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s, “armies your first objective is the Mediterranean, advance! “ exclamation reverberates deeply when remembering the history of Turkey’s independence and the significance of the site of this monument.

The historical houses in Afyon are a wonderful example of houses from the final period of the Ottoman Empire.

Afyonkarahisar is an important city in regard to the Mevlevi Order. Among the many Mevlevi Dervish Lodges that opened, after the ones that opened in Konya among the first to open was the Karahisar-ı Sahib Sultan Dîvânî Melevîhânesi.

With its intriguing architecture; this wooden mosque with its varnished tiles and diamond shaped tile minaret is an extraordinary example of the architecture style from the Anatolian Seljuk period.

The rich selection of culinary delights available in Afyon stems from the cultural diversity of the city which includes Turkmens, Circassians and Azerbaijanis. As a result, Afyon cuisine has moved closer to Central Anatolian cuisine, differentiating itself from Aegean cuisine. Undoubtedly, the first Afyon culinary delights that come to mind are kaymak (clotted cream), ekmek kadayıfı (syrupy bread pudding), lokum (Turkish Delights) and sucuk (cured beef sausage).
