“Forest Therapy”: Past to Present

Due to the increase in suicides as a result of work-related stress, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan conducted scientific studies in the 1980s to understand why. Based on their findings, it was proven that “phytoncide,” a natural chemical released from trees improves immune functions in humans: as a result, in 1982 Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Therapy), which means “taking in the forest atmosphere” was implemented. After many years of research, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan included Shinrin-Yoku as a cornerstone for preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine.

Forest Therapy principles states: “Accompanied with trained guides, in short, “breathing in nature” by opening all our senses to smell, listen, feel the colors and walk in the forest in silence”.
